Helping to save lives through blood donation is as much a part of an American
summer as baseball, hot dogs and apple pie.
And while July can bring family and friends together to celebrate America's
independence, it can also be a time to commend the national spirit of America's
blood donors.
Every day, people from coast-to-coast independently step forward to help others
in need by donating blood. But donations often slump in the summer as donors
become busy with seasonal activities and overlook donating blood. At the same
time, the need for blood increases as vacation-related travel and activities
escalate the chance of serious accidents that require blood.
So while the need for blood doesn't go away during the summer, blood donors
sometimes do. The American Red Cross is asking all eligible donors to make
donating blood part of what they do this summer.
